The “final” (Dis)Assembly

Switzerland provides a rich research culture around the themes of art education and mediation as well as many museums, galleries and festivals. (Dis)Assembly is a project which brought together practitioners in the field of gallery education, art mediation and socially engaged projects: curators, educators and artists from all over Switzerland. We invited participants to gather in Zurich once a month, starting in November 2015 until September 2016, to present, analyse and discuss what we are working on within our roles, what exactly it is that we want to achieve, what we are dreaming about and which methods we are using. In our last DisAssembly session taking place at the Shedhalle Zurich, we invite the interested public to discuss the outcome of our sessions with us by further highlighting the two following topics:

1. Unchangeable elements?

The art scene does not know any fixed work profiles anymore. Since several years art educators and curators use artistic strategies and artists act as art educators and curators. The question we would like to discuss in this context is, if professions in the art field are completely interchangeable today.

Thus relevant questions for us are: Who educates the artist, the curator, the art educator? Is art teachable at all and what does it need to train artists, curators, art educators? And finally: Are there any core skills or central abilities you cannot drop, if you want to work in the field of art, curating or art education?

2. Sustainable audiences?

Today not only art institutions do have a clear mandate – any project that receives public money is required to prove its ability of reaching new audiences and of breaking down traditional visitor structures. In our contemporary event culture it is crucial to prove a broad reach. But most institutions need more than temporary peaks of visitor structures – they need audiences relating to their program. What kind of strategies do art institutions use to create sustainable audiences for contemporary art? What are the criteria of sustainability? And how does the project of sustainable audiences relate to the pressure of visitation numbers
