Miners shot down

In August 2012 at the platinum mine in Marikana, the South African police shot and killed 34 miners who went on strike for higher wages. The impressive documentary "Miners Shot Down" (2014, directed by Rehad Desai) lets the workers tell their strikes and illustrates the events that led to the biggest massacre since the end of apartheid in South Africa.

In 2012, the Zug mining company Xstrata / Glencore was the largest shareholder of Lonmin that owns the platinum mine. Recently Glencore has sold these shares. This raises the question of the extent Xstrata / Glencore is responsible for those events. Compensation payments to the victims of the massacre and their families were still no rendered. After the film, a discussion follows with Bishop Joe Seoka (President of Bench Marks Foundation and spokesperson for the Marikana Solidarity Campaign), Ntombizolile Mosebetsane and Agnes Makopano Thelejane (widows of murdered miners), Nomarussia Bonase and Judy Seidman (Khulumani Support Group) and Dr . Jakob Krameritsch (historian, Vienna, activist Marikana solidarity campaign).

The event is a collaboration between Shedhalle, KEESA (Campaign Debt and Reparations in Southern Africa) and the Solifonds.
